PAT Testing – what is it?

Good plug
Equipment in good condition

PAT testing is an abbreviation for Portable Appliance Testing

and consists of a series of checks and tests to ensure that tools and appliances are safe for the user, those around them and the premises they are used in.

The term ‘portable appliances’ is a bit misleading as the items that need to be tested extend to static appliances that you would need a fork lift truck to move. At the other extreme, many familiar items such as laptops and printers don’t, themselves, need to be tested as they are powered by low voltage transformers. The transformers DO need to be tested though!

The following link, to an independent website, explains this in much more detail –

Musicians, DJs and performers will often find that venues insist on seeing a current PAT certificate before they allow you to set up. We can often test your specialist equipment at short notice and supply the relevant documentation as  PDFs the same day for you to email to the contact at the venue. We understand your business and your equipment better than a general electrical contractor!
